Senator Cervantes and elected officials,
As I read the below and follow our “representatives” trying to “fix” the crime problem, it reminds me of “Nero fiddling while Rome burns”.
Per the article, why are Democrats blocking bills that would reduce crime? Do Democrats favor and support the rise in crime?
You are offering to continue to “analyze the Arnold Tool”. You are proposing crime victims file lawsuits against gunmakers to deflect the scourge of drugs and gangs. Not one word on these two major key contributors to crime.
Las Cruces is facing a large spike in crime and you and your fellow elected officials know this with no resolution in sight.
Please take decisive action and put deterrence, consequences and accountability into the equation. Please stop with the defense of criminals while placing the burden on actual crime victims.
So while NM violent crime continues to soar into another decade, you and your fellow elected officials are “watching Nero fiddle”…..

New Mexico’s violent crimerate has tracked above both the national average and the rates of neighboring states for at least the last decade, with Albuquerque setting a record-high for homicides in each of the last two years — including 121 homicides last year.
Meanwhile, bills seeking to lower the crime rate have generated heated partisan debate in recent years, with majority Democrats blocking…….
From Cervantes…In addition, he said some existing state laws should be examined before legislators pass new laws, but said he planned to work on a governor-backed bill allowing victims of gun violence to file civil lawsuits against gun manufacturers.
Sen. Joseph Cervantes, a Las Cruces Democrat and chairman of the committee, set the agenda, signaling that the Arnold Tool will be a focus for lawmakers as they weigh strategies for addressing crime.
He made it clear he’s skeptical of proposals favored by Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and some legislators to overhaul New Mexico’s pretrial law more directly to make it easier to hold more defendants in jail while they await trail.
He questioned whether the proposals – often referred to as “rebuttable presumption” bills – would violate people’s civil rights.

Cervantes suggested instead that the judiciary’s use of the Arnold Tool is in for scrutiny.
“This is a tool that’s not established in statute,” he said. “It’s not a tool we as legislators have adopted or created.”
Prosecutors and public defenders in Friday’s hearing clashed over the impact of the Arnold Tool.
