El Paso Pushing “Abortion Sanctuary” Again Tomorrow!

URGENT: El Paso City Council Pushing Renewed “Abortion Sanctuary City” Resolution TOMORROW!!! ?
Juan,After just completing an amazing Southwest March for Life this past Saturday in Las Cruces, NM, it has just come to our attention that the El Paso City Council is at it again, in a renewed attempt to make El Paso an “abortion sanctuary city” by ignoring Texas state law, which you can read in full here, and they will be voting on tomorrow!

Note that this is a DIFFERENT ISSUE than last week’s resolution by El Paso County to stand in solidarity with Planned Parenthood!

While we were able to stop the city’s first attempt last July, there are now several new city council members following the last election.

SUBJECT: I am AGAINST Item #31 on the Jan 31 Agenda to Protect Abortion Providers

I am writing to speak strongly AGAINST Item #31 on the Agenda for January 31, 2023. The subject is to “honor and protect the rights of pregnant people” however the full resolution make it clear that the goal is to protect abortion providers in violation of Texas state law.

All the arguments that this is to protect women are based false political misinformation. The Texas Human Life Protection Act only criminalizes abortion providers. It does NOT criminalize women for seeking nor for even having abortions, whether out of state or even if provided illegally in Texas. This resolution is only furthering the political fearmongering and misinformation that will scare women into not seeking proper medical or legal assistance.

These actions also violate 42 US Code § 1983, exposing the City to liability from a failure to investigate, and ask police to violate their oath. Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia recently told Dallas City Council that a similar resolution requires police to violate their officer’s oath. This is an egregious overstep on behalf of the City Council. Police promise to uphold the law and you are asking them to do the opposite. It is apparent that El Paso City Council members are prioritizing abortion providers over the general public and those sworn to protect and serve their city.

Furthermore, over 1,000 medical doctors have signed the Dublin Declaration affirming that abortion is never medically necessary to save the life of a woman and that the prohibition of abortion does not affect, in any way, the availability of optimal care to pregnant women, because there is a fundamental difference between elective abortion, and the necessary medical treatments that are carried out to save the life of the mother.

If the city intends to support the equality, rights, and opportunities of pregnant women, we should focus on removing the expectation that has burdened women for the past 50 years under Roe vs Wade to alter, suppress, and destroy the normal healthy functions of her natural body in order to conform to male-based definitions of success. Instead we must shift the expectation to employers, universities, and our City to instead be the ones to conform to actually support women by focusing on pregnancy help resources, residence support and education programs that cater to the unique needs of new and expecting moms, family life resources and assistance, fair wages and maternity leave, programs supporting lactation and fertility awareness, and life-affirming healthcare that supports rather than destroys a normal healthy function of a woman’s natural body.

I will be contacting the Texas Attorney General and vocalize my concern over this abuse of power occurring in El Paso. Thank you for your time and concern.
