You very skillfully wove the story to “victimize” the homeless and how they should be treated with “compassion”.  And conveniently left out the compassion for the citizens, to include business owners and every day citizens , who are suffering at the hands of the homeless who commit criminal acts and are left to fend for themselves in recovering damage to their property or their selves. Everyone knows that not all homeless are criminals but how do you address the problem with a revolving door type of  justice system when a homeless individual does commit a crime.  Would you be as understanding if your office building was impacted the same as many of the local business are ? Did you report what allegedly happened to Batteries Plus this weekend ?
Have you taken on the challenge as a news organization or advocated for the “cataloging” (interviewing) the local homeless population to understand their individual issue?
Three top level “buckets”.  1) Substance abuse  2) Mental health   3) Enjoy or want to be homeless.
Individuals in Group 1 and 2 will be offered care and treatment under certain conditions.  Group 3 will be offered “affordable housing” based on their income.  If no income, they will be required to work in some form, for their keep.  Or individuals could be in a combination of the three “buckets”.  If we are really serious of fixing this problem, we have to take some very positive actions.  But people will have to get off the streets.
No one will take these steps because it is not “compassionate” or will have the ACLU threatening lawsuits.  So instead, you and the politicos will continue to endorse the problem with “band aids”  instead of proposing a real solution using individual accountability and responsibility.
And keep throwing out the word “compassion” associated with the homeless in the hope citizens will accept this issue out of “guilt” and normalize the problem so it ‘goes away”.
