For all of you who’ve worked hard collecting signatures, we thought we’d start off with the bottom line: Great work. Keep going!
Why continue?
Reason #1 We must stay the course and keep working until New Mexicans understand what these laws do to their families and communities.
Reason #2 The people should have the right to vote on these laws, and we must do everything in our power to get them on the 2024 ballot.
What’s the problem with the laws under referendum?
Religious Liberty – One law violates the right to religious freedom for churches that partner with the state to help people in the community. HB 207
Elections – Two of these laws devastate our elections – which could leave in power the people who created these terrible laws. SB 180 and HB 4
Parental Rights – Three laws violate parental rights, remove community sovereignty, and so much more. SB 397, SB 13, and HB 7
We saw over 450,000 emails and phone calls made to stop these bad bills during the legislative process to no avail. Our job now is to make sure our friends, family, and associates are aware of those elected officials who took action to get these laws passed.
Legal Happenings: The Secretary of State (SOS) continues to offer only the information that suits her purposes. The truth is, she doesn’t want to talk about the ethics complaint that has been filed against her. In addition, multiple court cases have been filed and there are more to come.
The SOS has stated in writing that all petitions are “deemed technically accurate as to form.” She also states on her website that all six petitions for the referendum are illegal. Her claim is that all six of the laws are for the “preservation of the public peace, health or safety” and not subject to referendum.
Let the courts decide what they will. Let’s keep doing the right thing by bringing awareness and collecting petition signatures.
