RECAP NCHI: Current Issues + July Outreach

Below is a brief recap of this week’s meeting.

Meeting Recap

We had attendees from 7 cities in New Mexico, New Jersey, California, Texas, and North Dakota. 

Current Issues and Updates

  • NEW JERSEY: Hilary reported that in New Jersey, the Attorney General has filed 3 lawsuits against local school boards that have enacted parents’ rights policies. The parents’ rights policies were put in place to ensure that parents are informed about transgender matters relating to their children.  The Attorney General is trying to stop these policies.  It will be important to watch the outcome of these lawsuits for potential applicability to other states.
  • CALIFORNIA: Land that has been used for a community garden is being taken by tech companies, potentially to turn it into a parking lot. Efforts are underway to push back against this seizure of land which prevents people from having access to space for growing their own food.
  • NORTH DAKOTA:  Several Bills to stop transgender ideology in schools and protect parents rights have been passed by the Legislature and Governor.  Although Grand Forks school board was considering defying these new laws, the board voted to comply with these laws (in a 5-to-4 vote).
  • TEXAS: In El Paso, a Diversity-Equity-Inclusion board was voted in by the City Council. 
  • NEW MEXICO: Several laws were recently passed which take away parents rights to be informed about transgender and abortion healthcare for children, as well as facilitating this healthcare to be performed at school-based health centers. There is a statewide movement to gather referendum petition signatures to allow the people of the state to vote on these laws in Nov 2024.
